Introduction
74HC595D 8-Bit Shift Register with Output Latch
The 74HC595D is a high-speed CMOS 8-bit serial-in parallel-out shift register with output latch, 3-state outputs and cascading capability.
General Description
The 74HC595D is a high-speed 8-bit serial-in parallel-out (SIPO) shift register with an output latch, fabricated using silicon-gate CMOS technology. It features low power consumption, high noise immunity, and 3-state outputs that can drive up to 15 LS-TTL loads.
The device consists of two independent stages:
  • An 8-bit shift register with serial input (DS), serial output (Q7'), and asynchronous reset (MR)
  • An 8-bit D-type storage register with 3-state parallel outputs (Q0-Q7) controlled by an output enable (OE) pin
Separate positive-edge-triggered clocks (SH_CP for shift register, ST_CP for storage register) allow data shifting and output latching to operate independently. The serial output (Q7') enables cascading multiple devices for expanded bit width, while the OE pin puts outputs in high-impedance state for bus interfacing. All inputs are protected by ESD clamp diodes.
Key Features
  • 8-bit serial-in, parallel-out with storage latch
  • Wide supply voltage: 2V to 6V (compatible with 3.3V/5V systems)
  • Low power: Quiescent current ≤ 80 µA
  • High speed: Shift frequency up to 55 MHz (typical at 5V)
  • 3-state parallel outputs for direct bus connection
  • Cascadable via serial output (Q7')
  • Asynchronous reset (MR) for shift register
  • ESD-protected inputs
  • Package: SOIC-16 (74HC595D)
Typical Applications
  • MCU I/O Expansion: Expand limited GPIO pins of microcontrollers (e.g., Arduino, 51 MCU) to 8+ outputs using only 3 control pins (DS, SH_CP, ST_CP); cascading supports 16/24/32+ outputs
  • LED & Numeric Display Drivers: Drive 7-segment displays, LED arrays, and dot-matrix panels by converting serial data to parallel drive signals
  • Serial-to-Parallel Data Conversion: Convert serial data to parallel for control of relays, valves, and actuators in industrial automation
  • Bus Interface & Data Buffering: Serve as 3-state output buffers for data transmission in communication systems
  • General Digital Logic: Used in timing control circuits, state machines, and data storage requiring serial-to-parallel conversion
